AGILE JOINT OPERATIONS PICTURE
HIGHLY CONFIGURABLE TOOLS FOR THE MODERN COMMANDER AND HIS STAFF
The Agile Joint Operations Picture (Agile JOP) has been developed to provide a rich set of collaborative and highly configurable tools to support military and civil Command and Control functions within a headquarters environment.
Overview
Future effective operational Joint and Combined Command and Control (C2) systems capability will comprise rationalised, integrated C2 applications hosted on a flexible, deployable systems architecture.
Integration of the capability will be key. Increasingly, the demands of different operational roles within the Command chain require a range of specialist applications, many with their own forms of user interface, geospatial visualisation and information analysis facilities, all consuming common network-enabled services. The complexity of this user-application landscape means that, increasingly, no single application suite will suffice to meet all needs.
What is required, is a responsive, adaptable, flexible and extensible framework for enabling future C2 users to access, manage and exploit the information they need consistently, via whatever application best suits their role. In addition, group and team working approaches must be embedded throughout the C2 system.
EDS's Agile JOP initiative brings together a proven track record in the delivery of current operational C2 systems, and a range of innovation initiatives, to demonstrate the next generation of C2 capability aimed primarily at the Joint Command and Control Systems era where the underlying infrastructure and associated services will be provided by the Defence Information Infrastructure (DII) or other nations infrastructures.
Through Agile JOP, EDS presents its vision for the effective implementation of C2 applications technologies consuming and providing services via a common Enterprise Service Bus in order to enable users to rapidly extract and evaluate the important information from the ever-increasing volume of data available in the head quarters.
EDS's Agile JOP initiative is already recognised as an important de-risking activity for JC2SP, and has an important role to play in de-risking the transition from legacy systems.
Capability
The Agile JOP illustrates how an approach based on Service Orientated Architecture and using common, open standards can provide a powerful suite of expansible capabilities to support current C2 procedures. The Agile JOP has been designed to provide a highly configurable working environment that can readily be tailored to suit the needs and tasks of individual users. Core features include:
- Combination of information from many disparate information services (exploiting information push to the user)
- A highly customisable user environment so that individual users can easily tailor the display to suit their needs and tasking
- Geospatial displays using Industry standard web services for ingest and export of information
- Collaborative working environments and tools to facilitate group working
- A lightweight client solution, minimising installation impact for legacy infrastructures
As the Agile JOP is infrastructure-neutral it can be used on new pervasive infastructures such as the DII and within legacy C2 systems, thus easing the process of transition.

Effective Implementation of C2 applications
- Optimise operational tempo, through the provision of significantly enhanced automation across the C2 business process underpinning Effects-Based operations;
- Increase C2 effectiveness, through the provision of Information management capability specifically aimed at reducing the workload on the Users in terms of training and use;
- Reduce C2 procurement and support costs, through the provision of a highly-capable, configurable and flexible applications suite as a service specifically aligned with the DII Deployed Infrastructure service
- A way forward for UK mission systems integration
- Sharing intelligence data
- Sharing route information between platforms using CRD - common route definition
- Maps and charts for theatre or mission data
- Sharing communications plans
- Sharing data fusion configurations
- Collaborating on ISTAR Collection
- Shared awareness of the operational environment
