BIOLOGICAL WARFARE AGENT DETECTION SYSTEMS

MEETING THE NEED FOR RAPID AND RELIABLE BIOLOGICAL HAZARD IDENTIFICATION AND REPORTING

Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) detection and warning systems are a key component in the war against Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD). EDS, together with key partners, has unrivalled experience in the design and provision of these systems which rapidly and reliably detect and report potential attacks.

Overview
EDS has a proven track record in the specification and delivery of military Biological Detection Systems (BDS) for both land and maritime environments. This delivery is achieved through key partners and relationships including Insys and Smiths Detection.

EDS provides the Biological Sensor Integration System for the land based Prototype BDS and the ship based Interim Naval BDS, both systems currenty in service with UK armed services. These systems were produced from concept to in-service within a few months in support of Urgent Operational Requirements and have provided many years of continuous service.

EDS, as part of the Insys led Integrated Biological Detection System (IBDS) consortium, has also supplied a significant capability enhancement to the UK Armed Forces. This system provides the UK Armed Services with highly automated world leading Biological Warfare detection and reporting capabilities.

EDS, as part of the Smiths Detection led consortium, is also supplying a Biological Sensor Integration System to Japan.

EDS is one of two companies working with the UK MoD on the Maritime Biological Detection System which will provide the Royal Navy and Royal Fleet Auxillary with BW detection, warning and reporting capabilities.

Biological Detection Systems Capability
The Biological Sensor Integration System is responsible for the control and monitoring of a number of state-of-the-art biological and chemical detectors. Data provided by the detectors is processed using in-house developed statistical and artificial intelligence techniques which seek to minimise the false alarm rates and correlate the detector outputs. The analysis is displayed to an operator and CRBN reports generated automatically. EDS Biological Detection Systems are fully interoperable with NATO CRBN warning and reporting systems and provide automated generation of standard NATO CRBN messages to aid analysis and prediction of biological hazard areas.

In addition to the provision of the software suite, EDS also provides the computing and peripheral hardware to host the software and to interface with the detectors. The Biological Sensor Integration System operates on Industry Standard computers including those manufactured by EDS. Rugged printers, CD Writers, Terminal Servers and Ethernet Hubs have been developed and supplied to support these programmes.
