RN COMMAND SUPPORT SYSTEM
'MISSION ESSENTIAL' DURING THE OPERATIONS IN IRAQ AND SUBSEQUENT OPERATIONS, INCLUDING THE TSUNAMI RELIEF
CSS is the Command Support System for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines. CSS functionality has been delivered in a successful incremental programme, with the first delivery in 1998. This has been followed by regular deliveries of functionality matching introduction into service of new platforms such as the Landing Platform Dock ships.
Overview
RNCSS provides 'Situational Awareness' linked to 'Decision Aids' and 'Planning Aids' plus 'Message Handling' into Maritime and Amphibious vessels, Royal Marine Units, Operational Headquarters, Training Establishments and Supporting organisations and agencies.
The number of clients varies between platforms from 72 in an LPD to one or two in a submarine or Support ship (RFA). Many platforms are also enhanced with extra clients for specific operations.
CSS provides secure connectivity and communications with 30 other command systems including UK single service, NATO and Coalition partners' systems.
CSS Functionality
- Situational Awareness: The Recognised Picture, both National and NATO, providing display and management of Units (space, air, maritime and land) combined with the display of overlays then linked to Decision and Planning aids provides situational awareness.
- Decision and Planning Aids: A comprehensive set of over 75 decision and planning aids are provided. These include: general, maritime, amphibious and environmental tools.
- Message Handling: Formal Signal Messages, Email, Chat, White boarding and Web publishing/browsing can be used to distribute and gather information.
- Secure Web Browsing
- Production and Management of the Wide Area Picture, including inputs from own ship sensors, data links and other souces of information.
- Collation and Display of Strategic and Tactical Data, including browsing the Joint Operations Picture (JOP).
- Message Handling, both formal signal messages and secure email.
- Production and Dissemination of plans and briefs supported by numerous software tools.
- Mission Rehearsal.
- Provision of Interoperability to Co-operating Land and Air forces including Situational Awareness and email to Bowman.
