TOTAL SAFETY MANAGEMENT SERVICES

SAFETY AS A MANAGED ENGINEERING ACTIVITY THAT IDENTIFIES, CONTROLS AND REDUCES RISKS

FACT SHEET

Safety Management an integral part of project management, design, development, manufacture and maintenance

Overview
Defence Acquisition Organisations and manufacturers have moral and legal responsibilities to their employees and others who could be affected by their activities. Their involvement in the design, development, manufacture and maintenance of military capability requires consideration of safety throughout the capability lifecycle. EDS fully embraces a culture of safety within its own organization and provides Safety Management Services to its customers via its Safety Group comprising highly qualified and experienced Safety Engineers.

Safety Management Services
Safety should be the result of managed engineering activity that identifies, controls and seeks to minimise all safety risks associated with the acquisition, use and maintenance of Military Capability. The Safety Management Services offered by EDS to satisfy this need include:

  • Capturing the safety requirements from a range of sources including: hazard studies, specifications, standards, operators, maintainers and management personnel
  • Evaluating safety requirements to establish whether they are consistent and complete.
  • Specifying and determining relative safety priorities
  • Development of Safety Cases
  • Defining the scope of Risk Analyses
  • Identifying hazards associated with the processes and systems that provide military capability and the environment in which it operates,
  • Analysing hazards for their impact on safety and assessing the level of risk
  • Identifying mitigation actions to eliminate hazards or reduce the risk of accidents
  • Documenting the results of the hazard and risk analysis activities and managing hazard logs
  • Safety Risk can rarely be wholly eliminated, but a managed safety process, applied to new, emerging or legacy capability, can provide assurance that all safety risks are measured and understood.

Experience
EDS' Safety Group are all either Chartered Engineers with the Institution of Engineering and Technology, or working towards that qualification. Their experience includes:
  • Managing both small and large safety programmes;
  • Production and review of Safety Plans and Safety Cases;
  • Auditing safety programmes for compliance with relevant standards (including UK Defence Standards, Joint Service Publications and US Military Standards) and with the Safety Plans;
  • Identifying safety requirements for major Defence procurement programmes
