EDS IN DEFENCE LOGISTICS
DELIVERING A WORLD OF INFORMATION ADVANTAGE
In Defence, the Operational Imperative - deliver force effect - remains unchanged: it's simply becoming more complex to meet. During recent conflicts, logistics has been recognised as integral to the Joint Operational Picture. Whilst logistics is about moving forces and material to generate force effect, logistics information increasingly underpins that same output - combining to reconcile two imperatives - effectiveness and efficiency. In the past, Ministries of Defence have typically procured their Logistics IS capabilities over time to meet a very different threat: but now they must transform - through evolution, not revolution. EDS plays the role of Intelligent Supplier, helping drive coherence between business process and IS - delivering logistics information that is a perfect fit for purpose.
Defence Logistics
EDS has worked to support critical Defence information technology and applications across the globe for many years. Confidence in our capability to deliver has led our Defence clients to look to us as trusted advisers to support their transformation to meet future challenges.
One key challenge is in transforming their relationships with Industry. Where planning and forecasting processes underpin any effective supply chain, as pressures increase, this will equally include the Defence Supply Chain:

The MoD transformation staircase sets out the way ahead from being a provider organisation to becoming a decider organisation. Not all areas will be at the same point at any one time. The journey from traditional contracting, through spares inclusive to contracting for availability and eventually contracting for capability will place a number of new demands on Defence logistics:
- Increasing collaboration with Industry will need wider availability of commercial infrastructure and common standards for simple, low cost access to Ministry infrastructure
- A shift in emphasis on information systems that track materiel flow in the end-to-end supply chain rather than monitor static inventories as the decider role transfers inventory holdings back to Industry under service-based contracting arrangements. Industry looks to achieve a greater degree of control over the tempo of the supply chain
- These arrangements will drive very different behaviours when Industry takes on the costs and risk of latency in the repair cycle - turning spares round faster to cut the numbers in the pool to meet a given service level.
Seeking visibility right through the supply chain to facilitate faster turn round times and aggressively eliminate redundancy and latency in the supply chain.
